The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
